O’Sullivan Bros Brewing Co is in Scripps Ranch just east off the 15 freeway at Mira Mesa Blvd. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon to check out what they had on tap.

These guys have been open just one year, and have built a solid line-up, with most beers trending towards the darker side of the spectrum. Surprisingly (for a San Diego brewery,) they have only one IPA in their whole portfolio, which they purposely didn’t even brew until they were established as a brand.

On this visit I sampled two beers, one from each side of light and dark.

Sailhead Murphy Pale Ale | 5.5% ABV

A Citra hopped Pale Ale that drinks like an IPA. Lots of bright citrus on the nose, with a light malt profile and a fruity finish. This is the only light-colored beer they had on tap today, with just an Amber and Red alongside the Brown Ale, Stouts, and Porters.

Our Father’s Stout with Mostra Artisan Coffee | 6.5% ABV

Incredibly deep flavors with a lot of coffee notes dominating. A little vanilla hint and smooth roasted malt sweetness on the finish. I could easily drink this on ice through a straw like a regular iced coffee. Delicious.

For a nice change of pace from the regular “75% Pale / IPA, 25% other style”  breweries that San Diego is known for, O’Sullivan Bros do a great job of not only making dark and malt forward beers, but also making them interesting and very easy to drink. They have s few seating areas around the small brewery and tasting room space, and they always seem to be full of happy locals on the weekends. Stop by on your next trip up or down the 15, they are really just about 45 seconds off the freeway. Well worth a stop.
