Only open since the end of August, La Mesa’s Helix Brewing Company is already finding their niche in the densely crowded San Diego brewery scene. Upon first sight, the attention to detail that they put into their outdoor Beer Garden lets you know that they actually value the experience of the visit as much as anything.
We got to sample all 8 of the beers they are currently pouring (9 if you count the Stout on nitro,) and they were all very clean and delicious. The surprise pick of the day is their 3.7% ABV Bavarian Weizen dubbed ACID DROP, which has a beautiful tartness that balances the old world malt bill, and makes for a perfect compliment to an 80 degree October day in La Mesa. Add to that three IPAs (Session, Rye, and Black Rye), a Pale Ale, a Hoppy Red Ale, a Chocolate Rye Porter, and an Oatmeal Stout, and you have something for just about every palate.
Helix Brewing Company is almost within spitting distance of the 8 freeway, at the Center St (El Cajon Blvd) exit going west, and the Spring St exit going east. Definitely worth a stop, and don’t forget their older neighbor just down the street Bolt Brewery! Brewery hopping in La Mesa? Yes!
