After 16 years existing as a Coronado-based brewery, Coronado Brewing Company took a venture across the Coronado Bridge and set up an additional location in the Bay Park district of San Diego in 2012. The new facility is their main production brewery, and also houses a spacious tasting room with a perfect view of all the brewing operations and barrel storage. The location is conveniently close to a lot of neighborhoods including Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Old Town, Bay Park, Clairemont, and many more. It’s situated in a very bike-able and flat part of town, which makes it suitable for an afternoon two-wheeled adventure. The beer-bottle bike racks are a nice touch. When you walk in the door, you are immediately greeted by their barrel racks. They barrel age their Old Scallywag Barleywine in Oak Brandy Barrels, the Punk’in Drublic Imperial Pumpkin ale in Bourbon Barrels, and their Imperial Stupid Stout in Oak Bourbon Barrels. You can find these as part of their “Coronado Collection” in limited releases. The tasting room usually has a lot of beers on tap which you can’t find packaged. They like to play around with a lot of different styles here, and you can always find something to fit your particular taste – whatever it may be – from a Mexican-style Pale Lager, to an Oatmeal Stout, plus the obligatory 4 varieties of IPA.The new brewing facility is currently firing on all cylinders, and Coronado Brewing Company just announced that they are expanding into an adjacent building, and will begin canning their beers in early 2016.I sampled the tasting-room-only For Days Session IPA, which they describe as a “highly drinkable and sessionable, low ABV, hop forward, pale ale with complex notes of lime, citrus fruits, and dank citrus.” At 5.0% ABV and 50 IBU, it came across very refreshing, with a complex nose, and beautiful sweet citrusy aftertaste. I would highly recommend this brew for any occasion, especially on a nice sunny San Diego afternoon!Coronado Brewing Company now has a total of 3 locations, with the original brewery and restaurant still located on Orange Avenue in Coronado, and a new Brew Pub located right across from the pier in Imperial Beach. Cheers to this crew of innovative and reliable brewers for playing a huge part in the legendary San Diego Craft Beer scene.
