According to Wikipedia, “The term bench mark, or benchmark, originates from the chiseled horizontal marks that surveyors made in stone structures, into which an angle-iron could be placed to form a “bench” for a leveling rod… Benchmarks are typically placed (“monumented”) by a government agency or private survey firm, and many governments maintain a register of these marks so that the records are available to all.”
In the same way that these physical benchmarks help map makers plot their map grids, Benchmark Brewing Company is putting San Diego on the map as not “just an IPA” town. Their commitment to sessionable and table beers is evident by the 2014 GABF “Session Beer” Gold Medal hanging on the tap handle of their 4.5% ABV Oatmeal Stout, which beat out 93 other competitors in the category. They have a great line up of brews for daytime drinking or for a post-hike recharge. Check out the video and listen to Benchmark’s Brand Czar Rachael Akin tell how they are making their mark on the San Diego brewery scene.
